Easy DIY: Make your own Denim Capris!

James Perse Spring Sweater and Denim Capris

Thank goodness for weekends. I wanted to start this weekend off with a very easy and quick tutorial on making your own capris. I went thrift shopping the other week and found a great pair of Paper Denim and Cloth jeans for only $8! They were only 1 size too large but still fit me fine. And since the inseam was already too short for me, I decided to make these into capris after realizing that I don’t have any denim capris at the moment! Read on for more instructions.

You will need the following items:

  • Fabric scissors (or just really sharp large scissors)
  • white chalk or white colored pencil (optional)
  • measuring tape (optional)
Ok, let’s get started! Remember, it’s always easier to remove than add! So if you don’t want them too short, be conservative with your cuts!
  1. Grab some old jeans – maybe ones that are out of style or getting too worn out at the bottom hem.
  2. Try on the jeans so you get an idea of where they hit your knee. Make a small snip right at the knee (or mark with the white chalk). This is assuming that you want to roll these up exactly twice at about 1.5″ thickness for the cuff. Cutting them right at the knee will allow them to end up a bit above the knee after cuffing twice.
  3. Take the jeans off. Lay them flat on the floor and make a straight cut where you marked or made the small snip.
  4. Fold them in half evenly and make sure the left and right side are aligned. Make the same cut on the other leg. Or you can use measuring tape if you want to be sure the inseams are exactly the same.
  5.  Roll the capris up twice and adjust. If they are still too long, cut more fabric are to adjust.
This is what I ended cutting off on my pair – once was the first cut and the second time was an adjustment.
