DIY How to cut a T-shirt – Olympics Edition

Gap Throwback 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Tee

For you girls who have ever picked up any swag T-shirts over the years, you know that it’s pretty rare that the shirt actually fits. Size small? Yeah, right. More like Large and XL! Along the same lines, how many times have you seen a shirt in the store and wish there was a girl version of it? Well, that’s how I felt about this throwback Olympics tee. And instead of wearing it as-is, I decided to girlify it. If you have a pair of scissors, give it a try!

The best thing about cutting T-shirts is that there is no need to finish the hem since the fabric won’t fray or anything. Also, it’s always good to have a reference tee to use for sizing or length. And remember, it’s always easier to take away than to add. So if you’re not sure, just cut a little at a time. Here’s the original shirt.

I used a shirt that I already owned to determine how wide I wanted the neck. From there, I cut two slits on the side of the neck as a starting point.

Finally, I cut the bottom hem. I wanted to make the sides higher up and the front and back slightly curved (sort of like a baseball tee). I lined up all the edges and folded the tee in half and then cut a half “U” shape.
