DIY: Tuxedo Pants Tutorial

DIY Tuxedo Pants tutorialYou may have noticed in my last post that I was wearing some fancy tuxedo pants! I had been searching for a cute pair of tuxedo stripe pants for a while now when suddenly, I had a thought – “Why not make them myself?”. I mean, I pretty much already made a pair for my Han Solo cosplay this summer so modifying these jeans seemed like cake.

Since I specifically wanted to make gold stripe tuxedo pants, I wasn’t sure I wanted to permanently modify my new pair of dark blue skinny jeans. That meant, no glue gun, no iron on fabric, no fabric glue. So as an temporary solution, I decided to hand sew the stripe on. For this pair, I went with a shimmery/glittery gold 1″ ribbon that I found in the Christmas section. One roll, which was 9 feet long, was plenty for my skinny jeans.

Supplies needed:

  • 1″ wide ribbon in the color of your choice.  Make sure you choose something flexible since you want to be able to bend your legs without breaking the ribbon!  You can also use seam binding.
  • A pair of skinny jeans – great variety of colors here.
  • Needle/thread/scissors

Instructions:

1 & 2. Take your ribbon and measure it along the outside seam of the pants. Make sure to cut at least 2-3″ extra past the top waist and bottom hem.

3. Start sewing from the inside by folding the ribbon over the waist. I’m sewing a basic running stitch, but just using a very short stitch on the gold side and a very long stitch on the side inside the jeans.

4. Here’s a closeup of the stitches on the gold ribbon side (shown in red).

5. Once you start getting around the knees, make sure you try on the jeans to make sure the ribbon is not too tight on the pants. You may need to sew the ribbon a little looser around the knee area depending on how stiff your ribbon is. Just make sure your thread doesn’t break when you walk!
