The Fall of the Gingerbread Empire

Gingerbread Star Wars AT-AT Walker

It’s funny how fast Christmas comes and goes in an instant. If you think about it, it’s really just the anticipation of Christmas that’s really exciting. I start thinking about Christmas the moment Halloween is over. Christmas songs flood my iPhone, the Christmas tree and decorations go up, and the countdown begins. And of course somewhere in between there, I find something crafty to do. Ever since I saw this amazing gingerbread AT-AT last year, I wanted to try my skills at a creative gingerbread “house”. I figured since I know pumpkins, maybe I can do something interesting with this food. I admit that I am “not a jedi master yet”, but practice makes perfect! Read on for more progress pics!

We started with some pre-made gingerbread pieces bought from IKEA a while ago and started slicing those into shapes. Icing was made using about 4 cups powdered sugar and 1/4 cup milk, but we thickened it with lots of powdered sugar. Other ingredients included:

  • Mini M&Ms (Christmas colors)
  • 2 rolls of Life Savers
  • Black licorice

Added a little Life Saver “wreath” to the front with mini M&Ms. A roll of Life Savers was also used to attach the head to the body. Black licorice was used for the guns.

Since I’m not a big cook, I had no idea how I was going to make this stand up. After much reinforcement and lots of trial and error, I decided that there was no way this guy was going to stand up on 4 crumbly legs. And so the gingerbread empire was defeated with the remains of this fallen AT-AT walker. :)
