Cosplaying Psylocke at SDCC 2014

1980s Psylocke - Armored Psylocke and Pink Psylocke Even though I’ve been to so many cons over the last decade, I still find it difficult to face the many emotions I go through at every San Diego Comic-Con. There’s the excitement and nervousness as the days approach with questions of “will I or won’t I get in the big panels?”. There’s the joy of debuting a costume for the first time as well as the shyness of remembering what it’s like to wear a costume in public. And there’s the thrill of having so much fun that you want to stay there forever followed by the depression when it’s time to go home.

This year, I decided to do two new costumes for SDCC. Tiff (@honeyboba on IG) and I met at Wondercon earlier in the year, instantly bonded over our love of cosplay (and maybe boba). After much brainstorming, we decided to dress up together as Psylocke, but the ’80s versions! As you know, I love the ’80s and pink and purple also happened to be my favorite colors when I was a kid so I couldn’t wait to wear our costumes together.

Tiff took on the challenge of making the more difficult version of Psylocke’s cloaked armor uniform and I did Psylocke’s first X-Men uniform in a bubblegum pink.

The materials were mostly vinyl covered spandex, chiffon fabric, and ribbons! I modified a pattern for a seamless front bodysuit and made all of the seam bindings using matching pink satin fabric. I had to improvise the sleeves and the buckles (as well as those weird buckles on her shin), but I was really happy with the results. Plus it was a nice change to cosplay something super feminine for once! Wig is by Epic Cosplay Wigs.

On my own, I think only about 10 people really knew who I was (or thought I was from an anime), but together, I think we were an explosion of pink and purple awesomeness. We definitely got a lot of Psylocke love and it was amazing how well our costumes went so well with each other even though we didn’t coordinate that at all!
